I am known to deride Chateauneuf du Pape, not because the wines aren't good, but because they're expensive, and there are so many other great options in the Southern Rhone that won't cost as much. The most underrated option may just be Ventoux. In the Ventoux there are a couple producers who clearly lead the pack, and Fondreche might well be counted as the leader of that very small group. When I saw that we could get a deal on one of their top wines from a great vintage, I did not hesitate.
2019 Domaine de Fondreche Ventoux AOC 'Persia' - $25 (reg. $30)
90% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. Aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry and blueberry, black fig, garrigue, terracotta, a high note of kirsch, and hints of cigar, olives, iodine... Full-bodied and spicy on the palate, layers of black fruit, herbs and spices, tannins are super fine, acid is integrated and lends freshness to all the dark richness. Finish is all about ripe dark fruit, warm spice and very fine tannin. I would drink it over the next 3 to 5 years, but it might really surprise me in 10 to 15...
This wine will combine with other wines to receive 10% off 6 bottles, or 12% off 12 bottles.
