For the past couple weeks, anybody who has found themselves browsing Pinot Noir at Craft and Cru has probably found Gabby and I pointing them in the direction of Digioia-Royer's amazing 2019 Bourgogne. It is simply one of the best $25 wines we have ever tasted.
Digioia-Royer's Bourgogne is priced like something mass-produced, but it is made from seven small parcels that come to a total of just one hectare! Vines from Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-St. Denis and Gilly-les-Citeaux contribute fruit to the blend, but this wine's smooth texture reminds us most of a nice Chambolle, one of Burgundy's iconic villages. These days, one should expect to pay at least $75 for a fine Chambolle-Musigny, but $100+ is more likely, and the most sought after wines of the village can go for crazy (crazy) money.
A respectable Chambolle-Musigny should be worth aging for a decade or two, but Digioia-Royer's 2019 Bourgogne is something to drink now and over the next 5 years. It has some Chambolle vibes, for sure, but I'm not gonna say you should treat it like one. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to encounter it in fine form in 10 years. We have a couple cases in stock, and we'll receive more next week. Try it very soon. You may want to stock up before it disappears.
Digioia-Royer Bourgogne Rouge 2019 - $25
Aromas of macerated dark cherries and blackberries, freshly turned earth, blood, fennel, violets... this is quite ripe on the nose, showing a bit of a roasted character, but it stays fresh and juicy on the palate, richly textured for Bourgogne, finishing with great earthy and mineral character. Superb for this level. Bravo!
Thanks for reading!
Cheers,
JPK
