For those in the know, Coudert's Clos de la Roilette is an easy perennial buy. We at Craft and Cru certainly take as much as we can get. This year we have some Cuvée Tardive and Griffe du Marquis to offer. I am excited to try each of the new releases, but as yet have just tried the Griffe; it was spectacular.
Coudert is a huge name in Beaujolais, and their wines sell out quickly every year. They represent a serious side of Gamay, structured and built to age, but they're also joyful and gloriously fruity wines that drink well right out of the gate. Their Cuvée Tardive is meant to spend years in the cellar, but a 2019 relished in December was simply wailing; there was no need to wait. Great Gamay may evolve positively for decades, but in my experience those same wines also drink well young. One thing I really love about Clos de la Roilette is that they are reliably beautiful on day two or three.
Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette 'Griffe du Marquis' 2019 - $40
Pithy, herbal, floral... ripe and juicy too, but overall so lifted, refined and fresh. Aromas of fresh seedy blackberry, cherry distillate, blood orange juice and a bit of pith, gentian, licorice, rose, iris... supple and smooth on the palate, super fine tannins and a fair amount of them for Gamay, elegant and lively, there's so much depth and density but it is vivacious and practically weightless on the mid-palate. Firms up on the long finish, with myriad pleasant bitter herbal and floral nuances, subtle juiciness and excellent fine tannic grip. This will develop for at least a decade. On day two and three this held up beautifully, softening and developing more spice and sweet flowers. The balance here is impeccable, this is exceptional Gamay.
