Morgon So Fine: Burgaud Grands Cras

We always buy lots of Jean-Marc Burgaud. Year in and year out, his wines are not just some of the best in Beaujolais, but some of the finest red wines made in France. His top cuvees are capable of improving for decades, and his entry-level is one of the world's finest values in red wine. We often talk about his Cote du Py bottlings, as they come from what might be the single most famous cru in Beaujolais, but his Grands Cras is our focus today.

Sure to become a much better known name, Grands Cras is a cru situated south of the cone of the Cote du Py. Here decomposed granite sands and clay are a contrast to the truly rocky soils of the Cote du Py. The wines in Grands Cras tend to show less savory and earthy nuance, and a brighter fruit profile. We love the dark and serious character of Jean-Marc's Cote du Py wines, but his 2019 Grands Cras is singing right now, and we know it will win many hearts.

2019 Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon 'Grands Cras' - $19

Aromas of sweet ripe raspberry and blackberry are almost jammy. Beautiful notes of iris, fennel pollen, fresh dirty ginger and crushed stone provide counterpoint to the exuberant fruit. Juicy and lively on the palate, firm tannins dissipate easily as gorgeous crunchy fruit takes over the finish. Long and refreshing with myriad berry nuances accompanied by pleasant stony and floral nuances. This will be worth following at least a decade.
