Pink: Fondrèche Ventoux Rosé

Vines at Domaine de Fondrèche

The vineyards at Domaine de Fondrèche were certified organic since 2009 but as of 2016 they left umbrella of certification as they sought the ability to use certain synthetic treatments in place of copper sulfate, which is the most popular anti-fungal used in organic vineyards. Copper builds up in the soil, a major concern for conscientious farmers planning the long-term viability of their land. This is a conversation we're interested in having. We're always keen on certified organic vineyards, but we're not dogmatic and we're not farmers, so we're also interested when a winegrower has reasons for eschewing certification.

After harvest, Fondreche ferments with indigenous yeasts and makes every effort to preserve the fresh fruit flavors inherent in the healthy grapes they grow. Some of their wines are aged in small barrels (mostly well-seasoned) but their rosé is aged in stainless steel for a few months before following the biodynamic calendar to bottle on fruit days. Every year, their rosé is one of our favorite pink wines: intense, pure, fresh, fruity, mineral...The 2020 vintage has just arrived, and it's a bit more fleshy than last year's 2019, but it remains a model of precision and freshness. It always beats so many more expensive pink Provence wines, and this year's bottling is no exception. It's also quite limited, so make it one of the first pink wines you try this season.

Domaine de Fondrèche Ventoux Rosé 2020 - $18

Aromas of clean fresh salty sea air, white peach, red berries, subtle floral stuff like orange blossoms... almost full, with sneaky silkiness, fresh and zippy, with great cut for Provence. Long, mineral, fruity, citrusy, a hint of fennel and herbs on the finish.

Thanks for reading!

Cheers,

JPK
