Well-informed Italian wine lovers know the G.D. Vajra winery. Many of you, our dear and discerning customers, know Rosabella, Vajra's delicious rosato, as one of your favorite summer wines. Far from the most serious wine in the Vajra lineup (they make several Barolo), Rosabella is nonetheless worth the attention of connoisseurs and amateurs alike. The blend is mostly Nebbiolo, with a bit of Barbera and Dolcetto, and the wine seems to reflect the gravity of Nebbiolo, as well as the typically crowd-pleasing character of the other two grapes. Most of the great names in Barolo do not make a pink wine. Lucky for us, Vajra makes two*.
Rosabella a stupendous value, and always sells out quickly. We will receive our last cases of the season tomorrow. Stock up?
G.D. Vajra Vino Rosato 'Rosabella' 2021 - $16
Always a favorite pink wine, the 2021 is a bit more zippy and lively than the past couple vintages, and I think I like it even more than usual. Bright and fruity nose: strawberry, raspberry, citrus, vague herbs, as well as whispers of roses and petrichor. Tart and vivacious on the palate, subtle silky texture, the focus is the joy of fresh fruit flavors, but this has sneaky complexity and density. Crisp and slightly saline on the finish, there's a "classic" mineral component to offset the lingering fruitiness. Not serious... but not not serious. Should be worth following a few years, but what's the point? Drink it up, there will be the fun of a new vintage next year.
